Although the core message of the Old Testament is the same, the number and arrangement of its books can differ between religious traditions. The Hebrew Bible and the Jewish Tradition

The Jewish tradition preserves the Old Testament in the form of the Tanakh. This name is based on the initials of its three parts: the Torah, the Neviim, and the Ketuvim. The Torah includes the five books of Moses. The Neviim contains the writings of the prophets. The Ketuvim includes the wisdom writings, psalms, and other works. In the Hebrew Bible, the total number of books is twenty four. These books contain essentially the same content found in other traditions but they are grouped differently.

The arrangement of the Hebrew Bible follows a thematic and historical flow. For example, the book of Chronicles appears at the end of the Hebrew Bible, serving as a summary of Israel’s history. In Christian Bibles, however, Chronicles is placed earlier, near Kings. This difference shows how the order of Old Testament Books can change the reading experience without altering the basic content.

The Septuagint and the Greek-speaking Jews

During the centuries before the birth of Jesus, many Jews lived outside the land of Israel. In places like Alexandria in Egypt, Greek was the common language. These Jewish communities produced a Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures known as the Septuagint. This translation contained the same core books as the Hebrew Bible, but it also included additional writings such as Tobit, Judith, Wisdom of Solomon, and Maccabees.

These extra books were not universally accepted as Scripture in the Jewish world, but they were widely read and valued. The Septuagint was used not only by Jews in the Greek-speaking world but also by the early Christians. As a result, the Septuagint became a major influence on the shape of the Christian Old Testament.

Christian Traditions and the Old Testament

The Protestant Old Testament

Protestant Bibles usually contain thirty nine Old Testament Books. The content is nearly the same as the twenty four books of the Hebrew Bible, but the books are divided differently. For example, the single book of Samuel in the Hebrew Bible is divided into First Samuel and Second Samuel. Likewise, Kings and Chronicles are split into two books each. The prophets are also separated in a way that increases the total number.

The Protestant Old Testament does not include the additional books found in the Septuagint. This choice was influenced by reformers such as Martin Luther, who preferred to follow the Hebrew Bible as the standard for the Old Testament. These extra writings are sometimes printed in a separate section called the Apocrypha for historical interest but are not treated as inspired Scripture in most Protestant traditions.

The Catholic Old Testament

The Catholic Church accepts a larger Old Testament than the Protestant tradition. It includes the books of the Septuagint that are not found in the Hebrew Bible. These are often called the Deuterocanonical books, meaning second canon. They include works such as Tobit, Judith, Baruch, Sirach, Wisdom, and First and Second Maccabees, along with additional sections in Esther and Daniel.

This difference means that the Catholic Old Testament contains forty six books. The order also follows a sequence closer to the Septuagint rather than the Hebrew arrangement. This canon was affirmed by church councils in the early centuries and reaffirmed at the Council of Trent in the sixteenth century.

The Eastern Orthodox Old Testament

The Eastern Orthodox Church often has the most expansive Old Testament canon. Like the Catholic Church, it includes the Deuterocanonical books, but it also contains other writings such as Third Maccabees, Psalm 151, and sometimes the Prayer of Manasseh. The exact list can vary between different Orthodox traditions.

The Eastern Orthodox Old Testament closely follows the Septuagint in both content and order. The emphasis is on preserving the Scriptures as they were received and used in the Greek-speaking Christian world. This approach maintains a strong connection to the worship and teaching of the early church.

Factors that Shaped the Differences

Language and Translation

Language played a central role in shaping the differences between Old Testament Books in various traditions. The Hebrew Bible was written primarily in Hebrew with some Aramaic sections. The Septuagint was in Greek, and later translations appeared in Latin, Syriac, Coptic, and other languages. Each translation had to make decisions about how to arrange, name, and sometimes expand the text.

Theological Perspectives

Different communities placed varying emphasis on certain writings. For Jews, the Hebrew canon reflected a deep commitment to preserving the Scriptures in their original language. For early Christians, the Septuagint was a familiar and widely used text that also pointed to Christ in prophetic ways. The theological value of certain books influenced whether they were included in the canon.

Worship and Liturgy

The way communities used Scripture in worship also shaped their canon. Readings from certain books became part of regular worship cycles. This encouraged the preservation of those books in the canon. In traditions where additional writings were part of the worship life, those books were more likely to remain in the official list of Scripture.
