8 Signs You Might Need Emergency Dental Care

Dental emergencies don’t always come with flashing lights or loud alarms—but they do come with warning signs. Whether it’s a sharp pain or a weird taste in your mouth, your body has ways of telling you something’s wrong. The question is: should you rush to the dentist, or can it wait?
At ExcelDent Dental Clinic in Gurgaon, we often meet patients who weren’t sure whether their symptoms were serious. So, to make things easier for you, we’ve listed 8 common dental problems that shouldn’t be ignored.
1. Loose or Knocked-Out Tooth
Got a wiggly tooth that wasn’t wiggly yesterday? Or worse, did one pop out completely after an accident or a fall?
This is a clear dental emergency. A knocked-out tooth might still be saved if you act quickly—ideally within an hour. Even if the tooth is just loose, it could mean there’s damage from injury, gum disease, or even bone loss. Either way, it needs immediate attention.
2. A Toothache That Won’t Quit
Toothaches can be sneaky. Sometimes they start as a dull ache and suddenly turn into sharp, throbbing pain.
If your tooth is hurting badly—or if the pain came out of nowhere—it’s a sign that something serious might be going on beneath the surface. Don’t tough it out. Let us check it out and take the pain away for good.
3. Swollen or Bleeding Gums
Seeing blood when you brush or floss occasionally might not be a big deal. But if your gums are constantly swollen, tender, or bleeding a lot—it’s time to see your dentist.
These are often early signs of gum disease, and if left untreated, it could lead to tooth loss. The earlier you get it checked, the easier it is to treat.
4. Swelling in the Jaw or Face
Notice swelling around your jawline or cheeks that came out of nowhere?
This kind of swelling could mean you’ve got an infection, possibly even an abscess. It’s not something you want to ignore—especially if it’s painful or spreading. Come in so we can find the source and treat it before it becomes a bigger problem.
5. A Bad Taste or Pimple on the Gums (Abscess)
If you’ve got a constant bad taste in your mouth, pain when you chew, or see what looks like a small pimple on your gums—you might have a dental abscess. This is a pocket of infection near the root of a tooth, and trust us, it’s not something to take lightly.
Left untreated, an abscess can spread beyond your mouth and cause serious health issues. It needs immediate care.
6. Metallic Taste or Missing Filling
Have an old metal filling? If you suddenly notice a metallic taste in your mouth, chances are that filling has come loose or cracked.
A missing or broken filling leaves your tooth exposed—and vulnerable. It can easily lead to pain, infection, or breakage. Let’s get it fixed before it turns into something more serious.
7. Something’s Stuck and Won’t Budge
Whether it’s a popcorn kernel, a piece of meat, or something else stuck between your teeth, don’t try to dig it out with sharp tools or force it with floss.
If you’ve tried brushing and flossing and it’s still stuck, come see us. We can safely remove it and make sure it hasn’t irritated your gums or damaged your teeth.
8. A Broken or Fallen-Out Crown
Dental crowns are designed to protect weak or damaged teeth. If yours cracks, breaks, or falls out, it leaves the tooth underneath exposed and at risk of infection or further damage.
The sooner we see you, the faster we can replace it and prevent the need for more involved treatments like root canals or extractions.
