Why Does the Amarnath Ice Shivling Melt and Reform Every Year? ποΈ
The Amarnath Ice Shivling is one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena in the world, a naturally forming ice stalagmite inside a high-altitude Himalayan cave at ~3,888 metres (12,756 ft). Every year, without any human involvement, it grows through winter, reaches its peak during the yatra season (July-August), then melts completely by autumn only to reform again the following winter.
The process is driven by freezing meltwater and moisture seeping through the cave ceiling. What makes it spiritually significant is that its cycle closely follows the Hindu lunar calendar; the Shivling typically peaks around Shravan Purnima (full moon of the month of Shravan).
Scientists attribute it to a controlled cave microclimate, drip patterns, and temperature gradients. Devotees see it as Bholenath's divine presence manifesting in physical form. Both perspectives make this one of India's most discussed natural and spiritual wonders.
Share your yatra experience answer any or all:
1. Which month did you visit: and how big was the Shivling when you saw it?
2. Did the altitude, cold, or trek difficulty affect your darshan? Any AMS symptoms to warn others about?
3. Which route did you take: Pahalgam or Baltal? Would you recommend it for families/seniors?
4. How far in advance did you book your tempo traveller on rent for the base camp journey from Delhi?
We booked through Delhi Tempo Travels ( https://delhitempotravels.com/ ) last year and the experience was smooth, comfortable tempo traveller, punctual driver, zero vehicle hassle. Recommend booking at least 4-6 weeks in advance.
